This post is inspired through a novel entitled “Birdsong” written by Sebastian Faulks.
It is the story of a man and part of his story develops as a soldier during the First World War.
At a point, when the British Army is prepared to attack, the General says to them: “You must strive to win for your families, your King and your country” and bit later, he continues: “When in doubt, go forward…when in doubt, go forward…”
And yes, that’s how it is! In any war! We are in war, not the war as the world understands it. In fact, our Lord Jesus Christ instructed us to a non-violence attitude, to turn the other cheek and live against the sword and spend a life in forgiveness no matter the violence around us.
Still, he instructed us and encouraged us for another kind of war, a constant war:
Ephesians 6v12
“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”
Yes, we – as Christians – are in a constant war. We need to fight (but not in flesh and blood!) for our families, our authorities, our nations and our King (not the British King who belongs to earthly authorities but our King, our Lord and God)… “we must strive to win…”
And when the doubt comes (and it will come!) we should remember that “When in doubt, go forward…”
That’s how we conquer!
Love,
Dimitra

And yet that command, in the first world war, was how they all got slaughtered.
So true Karita! they were slaughtered from both sides and so, fleshy wordly war has no winners! Blessings!
