“David was greatly distressed because the men were talking of stoning him; each one was bitter in spirit because of his sons and daughters. But David found strength in the LORD his God.”
Imagine David and his situation. You know David: a great king, a great personality – with his weaknesses and strengths. You know how he walked his path since he was a young boy. Here, he is; frightened for his life. What a painful death could be! a death by stoning!
It is important to look at the spirits of his soldiers and his own. His men were bitter in spirit, they had lost trust in David’s decisions and acts. Bitterness is a great enemy for our soul. We, all, once or more times in our life, we experienced bitterness. Most of the time we allow bitterness to dwell in our life for long time, up to years sometimes! It is a dangerous feeling. It can drive us to violent acts, to bitter acts against ourself and others. It is not a creative feeling and does not help us or any body else.
So, the men were bitter but David was different, once again! We read at the previous verse that also the two wives of David were captured. He had some reasons to be bitter with himself or God. How did God allow something like this to take place?
Thus, he did not. No matter his weaknesses, David knew the Lord as his Lord and always he was calling upon Him. He did not allow the problem, his fear, his anger or any bitterness to cover him and conquer his soul. He looked upon the Lord and he FOUND STRENGTH IN THE LORD HIS GOD.
The Lord was sufficient for David.
Our God, our Father in Heavens, help us today to look upon you, to wait upon you than to allow anything to bitter our souls. In the name of Jesus Christ, I pray, amen!
