You shall have no other gods before me…

Exodus 20v3

“You shall have no other gods before me.”

That’s where we usually miss it! It is the Lord who speaks and He gives His 10 commandments. All commandments eventually conclude in two: love your God and love your neighbour. When we practice those, we cover all 10 commandments given to Moses.

When the Lord spoke and said that we should not have other gods before Him, it was a period in history that people were practicing idolatry. Nations, known through the ancient civilization, had usually gods and goddesses who could help them in moments of need, who could explain all the mystery of how the world was created and how it was performing. Each god was responsible for some specific “subject”. Still, there are million of people who believe so!

The Lord made His existence known through His first nation and His first people, the Jews. Finally, the Lord made Himself known  to all nations and His Kingdom is open to all who will believe in Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour.

So, who could be those other gods, for us today, us, as believers? Gods can be anything that it is more important than God, the Lord Himself. It can be anything, anyone, any occupation, any feeling, any pride or any obligation. Believe it or not, even ministries started for God’s work can become a god in the hands of the minister, than keeping the Lord as first priority in life.

I encourage you today to check your life, your daily life and write down with what you are much more pre-occupied than the Lord. What is that thought, hurt, offend, work, pleasure, spouse, child, habit that/who takes your mind, body and soul away from your first priority, your first love: the Lord.

Check it, find it, ask His forgiveness, give it to Him and move on! Amen!
