What is true?

There is no timing with God! It is forever! Infinite eternity! DS, ©

What is time? How can we define it? Science gives us some good references, such as:

Calendar, clocks, watches, linear time, cyclical time, numeric and divine time, space time, relativistic time, Newtonian time or quantised time! Don’t forget time travel!

I am fascinated about the last one, the time travel:

“Time travel is the concept of moving backwards and/or forwards to different points in time, in a manner analogous to moving through space, and different from the normal “flow” of time to an earthbound observer. In this view, all points in time (including future times) “persist” in some way. Time travel has been a plot device in fiction since the 19th century. Traveling backwards in time has never been verified, presents many theoretic problems, and may be impossibility. Any technological device, whether fictional or hypothetical, that is used to achieve time travel is known as a time machine.”

(According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time#Relativistic_time_versus_Newtonian_time, accessed Dec 2011)

I wish that I could do just that! In fact, I am more interested to travel backward because there are so many moments of history that I would love to witness them by myself and create my own views on the facts than just read the perception of historians, through books!

Future is not my main concern. I look forward to the future as I am curious and excited to discover and witness what the Lord has in the basket for me but …no rush!

There are a lot of thoughts, opinions, scientific theories as well as theological ones that present or try to prove what time is.

It is wonderful to read how God defines time. It is written:

2Peter 3v3-9

“First of all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our fathers died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.” But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens existed and the earth was formed out of water and by water. By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men. But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.”

I understand the above as God defines time with no definition! He does not give any definition at all!

There are plenty of debates about:

  1. How this world/universe/ cosmos was created. Others believe, literary, as it is written in the Bible (in the book of Genesis) that the cosmos was created in 6 days (as we understand days in our modern days, 24hrs). Others believe in evolution. Others believe in a big bang followed by evolution and honestly, I do not know how many thoughts and views, estimations and beliefs are out there…in the universe!
  2. Recently a new planet was discovered that seems to have quite similarities with our earth. Others say that humans can live on that planet as long as the conditions are so similar. Others say that this is not possible as the Bible does not speak of another earth or humanity.

I am sceptical about all the above. May I add my own theory? No, no …I do not make a doctrine out of it but I love to express my thoughts – I might be absolutely wrong!

  1. Is it that only one theory shall be right? The Lord clearly says that one day can be thousand years and vice versa. What’s wrong with God creating the world through a kind of evolution and not in 6 factual days? I do not think that Genesis or any other book provides clear details of how things took place practically. For sure He created all that has existed and exists through His Word – He spoke – but about timing and detailed methods, nothing is truly said. In fact, the few things described in Genesis are not in full contradiction with the sciences (i.e. the void, the waters). The truth could be somewhere in the middle or somewhere else…

They say that if it is accepted that cosmos was not built in 6 days, many will argue whether other parts of the Bible are true, even whether Jesus is true. One does not contradict the other and it should not be an issue. The Lord can present Himself to His creation, he doesn’t need our human quarrelling about His creation!

2. What makes people to believe that there are no humans anywhere else in the universe? Truly, the Bible does not speak about another earth but does not speak about any other sun systems either or about anyone of the planets of our sun system, Pluto or Venus – specifically – but they do exist one by one!

Mainly, why do people try to prove their theories and understandings by proving others wrong?

I don’t find within the Bible any definition of time. What I find, nevertheless, is the following:

2Timothy 2v14

“Remind [them] of these things, charging [them] before the Lord not to strive about words to no profit, to the ruin of the hearers.”

What this post is really about? It is about stop debating in a way that we do try to prove that we are right by proving others wrong. This is not the way. There is nothing wrong with debating as long as it is not quarrelling. There is big difference.

We will not prove the existence of Jesus, our Lord, by proving others wrong. A person who starts searching for Jesus, who knocks the door and seeks to find the truth does not do so because s/he wonders how the world was created or what will happen in the future. I believe – I might be wrong – that mainly people need reconciliation with God because they need reconciliation with their own self and only through the true God can help them to do so. Nothing can happen without/through Him.

What is time? Who truly knows? I am not an expert but I do know this: theories are reviewed and renewed or expanded, as we learn more about our physical and emotional environment. I believe that there is an exciting cosmos out there for us to discover and it is a thrilling journey for humanity. All good news is welcome. In the end, we are not the centre of the universe!

Yet, our Lord is the centre of the world/cosmos/universe and He can guide us to better understandings and definitions through His wisdom not ours. That’s why it is written:

Proverbs 3v19

“The LORD by wisdom founded the earth; by understanding He established the heavens;”

Proverbs 4v5

“Get wisdom! Get understanding! Do not forget, nor turn away from the words of my mouth”

ABOVE ALL:

1Corinthians 13v9-13

“For we know in part and we prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away. When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things. For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known. And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these [is] love.”

We know in part (both disputing parties!) and the day that we will know in full will come. Just be patient and work hard! The most essential is that we keep the work of love alive! Amen!
