S/he is not going to change, you have to…

The above title is in reference to domestic abuse. People need to choose to change and to find the way to achieve the way.
Working with the ones abused, I have to say that the above saying is not only a saying, it is a must, it is a truth one accepts in order to survive.

Let’s be honest: we have been abused and we have abused. Abuse is not only the physical one. It is the emotional one, the spiritual one, the mental one, the sexual one.

Another truth is that love does not hurt and love is not abusive! We cannot claim in the name of love any kind of abusive behaviour.

Also, when we love, a lot of us expect the other person to change. I talk about any kind of relationship – friendships, work mates, spouses and family members. When we realise that the other individual does not change we make our mission to change him/her!

The truth is that there is only one person we can change: our own self! God can change others but we are not God. Still, we can keep praying for someone’s change, a change that can be accomplished permanently ONLY through the Holy Spirit!

We can abuse people, we might abuse positions and vocations, as well! We might abuse our relationship with the Lord, we can abuse our mission and purpose.

It is one thing that I desire to say through this post:

2Corinthians 13v5

“Examine yourselves [as to] whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?–unless indeed you are disqualified.”

I believe that we need to examine our self constantly, not with a judgemental spirit but in order to make sure what we keep and what we change. We have a great helper, the Holy Spirit who lives inside us and He can show to us what to change, how to change and from what or whom to keep ourself away. We ought to examine our self and check whether we are in the faith and whether we act in love; whether we become abusive to others; whether we abuse God’s purpose in our life. Remember that it takes HONESTY to self – examine!

Love,

Dimitra
