Fig trees in the Bible…

Fig trees in the BibleI have to admit that I am glad that I am Greek in origin and did my education in Greece, educated in ancient Greek, even if I hated at that time! I had no idea that the Greek language and especially ancient Greek could help me to read and understand details in the Bible. Another reason that I am glad is that growing up in the Mediterranean area, I had the privilege to indulge myself in figs, grapes and pomegranates!

When I read the Bible and as most of happenings take place in the area of Mediterranean those above mentioned plants are filling scriptures, mainly in two ways: used as they are and exist, as well as, becoming symbols for a parable. Today, considering all international trading, people around the world eat figs, grapes and pomegranates but not that necessarily know the trees and plants! (attached photo: a baby fig tree).

So, going through the Old as well the New Testament fig trees are all around. It was normal as people could relate to them. It was part of their life, their natural environment and within their food chain. Using a parable or a symbol, what more useful than something we interfere with all our life.

There is a specific scripture that inspired me today:

Matthew 24v32

Now learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near.

Chapter 24 of Matthew is all about Christ’s coming and the end of the days, a really inspiring chapter. As I looked at my fig tree planted just few weeks ago – when winter had just gone and spring was on the way (remember I live in the south hemisphere so it is spring time, moving forward to summer), I saw exactly what the scripture says: the branches are tender and it is now that puts forth the leaves… I recognized that summer will be here soon! That’s the circle of nature, the circle of a fig tree! I love figs! They are so sweet and tasty…yummy!

The previous scripture is:

Matthew 24v31

And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.”

The next one is:

Matthew 24v33

So you also, when you see all these things, know that itis near—at the doors!”

The Lord does not want us ignorant! He desires for us to know much – we won’t know everything. The knowledge that is important for us to know exists within the Bible! Speaking about the last days, the above scriptures encourage us to keep the spirits high, to keep walking the path as when we see the summer coming, all will be delicious for His elect! It will be a difficult time for many but very sweet and yummy for the elect!

Love,

Dimitra
